Sharks, Teeth and Spears

Abbott’s Booby
Adam’s Shadowdamsel
Alcatrazes Lancehead
Aldabra Drongo
Altamaha Pocketbook
Angola Cave-chat
Apron Ray
Bald Uakari
Berg’s Tuco-tuco
Captain Fine
These all came from a list…
on an endangered animal site.
They listed over 10000 animals.
 Today is Endangered Species Day.
There are so many animals
to choose from…
 I’m going to learn about
the Speartooth Shark
(which means you are, too!).

While there is no
information stating
that this shark’s population
 has declined significantly,
it is estimated
there are only 250
mature sharks living
 in the Northern waters
of Australia.

Guessing
(because these sharks
seem to be very elusive!),
 it seems that these sharks
give birth to live young –
which are about 59cm long.
 They have small eyes
and skinny teeth,
suggesting they mostly eat fish.
  They are grey on top,
white on the belly…
The Speartooth Shark
has a short, broad snout
and fewer teeth
than other sharks
(though a row of 54
 teeth in both jaws
still seems to be a lot!)
 While these sharks
could grow to 2-3 metres,
 the longest measured shark
of this species was 175cm.
While their biggest threats
are people
and their fishing habits…
 it seems that crocodiles
pose a threat, too!

Too many animals are endangered…
 we have to do something
 about that!
Knowing that people
 won’t protect something
they don’t
understand/love/know
– use today to teach people
 about endangered animals…
