When The Sun Went Away

The kids were pretty excited
about today’s solar eclipse.
So, we did some art!
They produced these pieces
with no help from me…
after looking at a few different
photos of eclipses.
So many of the kids
loved their art so much,
they took it home
to share with their families.

Sanity - Where For Art Thou?

I don’t know what
special day it is today
and frankly, I don’t care.
I go to work each day
and face thirty little faces.
Most of the faces wear a smile.
 Some of the faces
look a little empty of thoughts
and some of the faces
rarely look my way –
and I have to admit,
there are far more
interesting things than me…
Who can really blame them?
 Sometimes though,
I get snarled at…
glared at…
I’m called names
and fists get clenched
 and pushed towards me.
For a while, tables and chairs
 were overturned,
but I sat on one table –
which was at high risk
of being overturned,
and my eyes spoke words
 I couldn’t say, so…
furniture throwing seems
 to have stopped.
I’m teaching in a demountable
 at the moment…
fancy, I know!
  The worst thing about
the demountable is the noise…
 there are several places
where the floor creaks and farts –
 so funny!
Any little noise is magnified
 in a demountable…
so, rubber balls being repeatedly
 bounced against the walls
can become noisy and distracting…
 And no, it’s not me
doing the bouncing of the balls
 (Though I am the one
clicking the pen lid!)
Fists and feet thumping
 against the floor
make a lot of noise…
Growls and hisses
finish our little musical act.
So, when these things happen
(regularly!),
I am very impressed
with 29 little faces
determined to help me…
29 little faces try their very,
 very best to concentrate
on their work.
They quietly stand up
and move across the room
whenever they feel threatened…
 they over-compensate
for the inappropriate behaviours…
 and for that,
I thank each and every one
 of those 29 little faces.
I thank them,
because they choose me…
 they choose learning.
I’ve never worked so hard.
 So, I’m not too sure
what day it is today…

Here's some of our work:

The kids are in year 3.

Their ages range from 8 to 10.

 Continuous Line drawings...

 Sometimes, you just have
to stop and
"smell the roses".

Smoke and Mirrors Day

Smoke and Mirrors Day
This day has left me
 a little stumped.
It’s a day of illusions
and I just can’t find
what I am looking for...
 too much smoke?
Too many mirrors?
 “Smoke and mirrors”
means that things are
 not really as they seem...
 smoke and mirrors are used
 to hide things...
 Magicians use smoke
 and mirrors...
I’m heading towards the
“illusion” side of things,
“optical illusions”.
Have a look at these:

Guy playing saxophone....
Or a lady?

Cover the top of the building
with your palm...
the building will look
like it is sticking out.
Now, cover the bottom half
of the picture
and see what happens!

 Two oldies...
or a musician and a listener?

Check the nose!
Which way is it pointing?

Trumpets & Trunks

I said goodbye to the class
on Friday.
They ran,
yelling and screaming from the room...
celebrating the holidays.
(No... I'm tough enough
that they left calmly,
 after a final "Be Safe
and Look After Yourselves"
warning!)

These elephants were our last real
art lesson together.

They no longer want me to give detailed lessons on how to create their masterpiece...
They believe in their artistic ability now.

One of the boys copied
my drawing to create
a very talented piece
of his own.

And this was our final
Artist of the Week.

Foot and Mouth

Have you ever tried to paint a picture?
With your foot?
I have.
I made a group of kids do it once.
I joined them.
While the smell of foot odour
hung in the air, we painted...
and complained!
My muscles were aching
before I'd really even started...
I had no control...
my toes - which are very good
at pinching and grabbing -
became sore and tired...

In Australia in 1956,
an international for-profit association
 fully owned and run
by disabled artists was formed.
supports disabled artists.
The members paint
with their mouth or feet.
Bill Mooney was born in 1942.
At 16, Bill dived into shallow water
and became paralyzed
from the shoulders down.
Since then, he has been
confined to a wheelchair.
By 1960, Bill was painting
and joined MFPA in 1963.
His paintings have been sold
internationally and usually represent
the Australian landscapes and seascapes.
He is married with three children.
Bill’s piece is titled:
Red Western Australia.

Beryl became interested
in art as a young child.
Her cerebral palsy
limited her ability to use her hands,
so Beryl paints with her mouth!
She has been a member of the
Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA)
since 1979.
This is one of her pieces,
titled: The Old Shed.

Reverend Glenn Barnett also
had a diving accident.
At the age of 15, he was
confined to a wheelchair.
Two years later,
a boy asked him to draw a picture
and his artist days began.
His work was first published in 1971.
This was also the year he married.
In 1974 he became a member of MFPA.
The dry Australian landscape
is Barnett’s favourite subject,
but he sometimes does face-painting
at fetes and shows.
Barnett’s work here is titled:
Magestic Bush.
 The next two pictures
are some of my favourites
from the
website.

Wolf Week

Once,
I taught a student from Uzbekistan.
He explained to me that the wolf is an animal we have learned to hate... and for no real reason.  He made me promise to learn to like wolves...
I still remember that conversation.
So, I teach my kids about wolves... so that they will learn to love them, too!

In a pack, only the alpha couple have cubs.  She will lie in her small den, unable to hunt while she cares for her cubs.  The other females will bring food for her, leaving it at the den's entrance.

Once she starts hunting, she will kill an animal... swallow the meat and return to her cubs.  The cubs can smell the meat and she coughs it up for them to eat.  Disgusting, right?  And yet... we sometimes chew on food to soften it for our "young".

These animals howl to keep track
of each other.
Their howl lasts for at least
five seconds.

We had a few different choices
for our art this week.
The kids shocked me
by choosing a "tracer"
as the Artist of the Week.

One of these pictures is mine...

Boring facts vs Cool killers

Orcas

The kids didn't really care
about their huge size...

The kids didn't really care
that they have 100 teeth...

The kids didn't really care
that a dorsal fin
can be 1.8m tall...

The kids didn't really care
that orcas belong to
the dolphin family...

The kids didn't really care
that females can live decades
longer than males...

The kids didn't really care
about anything,
but...

They loved the way orcas can push themselves onto a beach, ganging up and grabbing sea lions on the coast... and then wriggling back into the water.

And, they loved watching orcas tipping ice floes to slide a seal off the ice and into the waiting mouth of another orca.

This, they loved.

Have Pride

The lioness
does most of the hunting,
but the lion
is the first to eat.
Hardly seems fair!

After a fight,
a new male may move in
and take over a pride...
The new male
will kill the cubs
of any other male,
so that only his genes
will carry on...
Seems a bit harsh!

That huge mane of hair protects him against scratches and bites during fights with other males.

This next lion started out beautifully and then the artist became a little over-excited with the use of charcoal and soon enough, we were left with a black blob...  After some frowns from me, the young artist attacked the black blog with an eraser... and we ended up with a pretty great lion!

Loving all things baby -
the girls drew cubs.

Our classroom is starting
to look like a zoo!
