Up For A Picnic?

Picnic Day

I learned that the original picnic
used to be a group of people,
in a restaurant,
with wine from home.
This was way back in 1692.
  Later, it became a meal
where everyone brought something
 to share.
  By the nineteenth century,
a picnic became an outdoor meal.
  There are countless
“Picnic Days”
now.
I’m about to give away
a family secret
... a favoured picnic spot of ours...

You have to walk up a hilly track
 and sneak through a hedge
to get there.
 The spot is nestled
under a couple of big gumtrees
and is protected
from the winds
by gorgeous old rock walls.

Hills slope down to the sea
and curious horses
brave peanut-butter
coated children’s fingers,
which carefully
stroke their fur...

One of our favourite
picnic areas
is a very old cemetery.

We call it “The Secret Garden”.
(Check out how much we have grown!)

Peppermint Perfection

See!
I told you I knew
clever people!

Homemade peppermint patties!
Woohoo!
(And, while the offer
of freshly cooked chilli
was tempting...
I was happier
with some chocolate coated
peppermints!)
Thanks!

A Little Bit Rusty

  I love old stuff...

Add a little rust to an ordinary object...

Oranges... reds and browns

And chances are
I'll love it.

Like this old shipwreck -

I love the colours.
I love the textures.

Making Friends Again

We're making friends again.
We decided it would be for the best.
It's not easy...
... there's still a great deal of awkwardness...
but...there's no other choice.
We're making friends, again.
On Sunday, my car threw a tantrum.
I didn't really understand.
Holding a grudge into Monday,
my car relunctantly drove me to work.
Red lights were flashing and I was scared.
This tantrum was bigger than most.
It seemed that the only way I could make peace with my disgruntled car - was to buy it an expensive gift...
... which I reluctantly did.
Once the gift was placed under the bonnet...
all seemed to be forgiven.
While the car is happy...
I'm now the one holding the grudge...
But, I'm trying to forgive and move on.
An alternator -
it seemed that this was the only way to keep my car happy.

A Day To Remember

There’s a day I hardly remember -

But, it’s one of the most

memorable days I’ve had!

Way back when I was a teenager, I was sitting

at the edge of a market. A Thai market

I can’t remember why I was sitting there.

(With unfamiliar languages bouncing around me,

there’s a chance I didn’t know - even then!)

I don’t remember exact events

or smells or noises from that day...

But, I remember Thai markets.

I’m sure there was a lingering sewerage smell

and the stench of rubbish would

have drifted from a dark corner.

Old ladies, bent from years of rice planting,

would have moved through the stalls,

selecting pieces of fruit and vegetables for their meals.

No doubt, it was hot and

I was sweating... for sure!

I probably heard the splashes as an eel

flipped in a tub of water, waiting to be sold.

Tiny turtles, frogs and fish were probably around me.

A buffalo or a goat may have been

chopped up and laid on the hot cement,

ready to be sold.

Chickens would have been housed

in small bamboo domes.

Desserts and delicious treats

would have been on display and someone

would have been selling iced coffee,

drowned in sweetened condensed milk

and served in a plastic bag.

So, what made this day so memorable?

... A sudden weight on my shoulder.

I was sitting on the seat,

surrounded by the market,

when a great weight

suddenly dropped onto my shoulder.

As I looked over my shoulder,

I stared up the trunk of an elephant.

An elephant had placed its trunk on my shoulder!

If it hadn’t happened,

I probably wouldn’t have believe it.

The elephant’s mahoot must have thought

I was a strange sight, sitting by the market,

surrounded by all things Thai.

A moment later, the elephant

lifted its trunk and turned away.

I gazed after it in amazement.

Years and years later,

I still remember this so clearly.

It's proof that even the most usual of days

might turn out to be one of the most amazing...

You just never know.

Happy Surprises

After being named the Toastmaster of the Year in my Club, word started to trickle through the people I work with. A few club members work with me.
I was still very surprised when one of the ladies I work with handed me this card, with a wonderful smile and words of congratulations.
Sometimes, you forget the little things...
Days follow the usual routine -get up, go to work, come home...
It didn't take much to surprise me out of my simple routine and bring a smile to my face.
And then, there was this...
A bunch of kids ran up to me, screaming my name. Turning, I noticed my Public Speaking students (who did a wonderful job in the Public Speaking Competition. One student even achieved the Highly Commended award.) With big grins, the students handed me a huge Thank You card and a great box of chocolates. Little things making a big difference.
