Drive On In

Nowadays, kids watch movies
on their ‘phone.
Today’s kids watch movies
in high definition,
with quality animation
and surround sound.
But… are they missing out?
In the olden days,
kids watched movies
at the drive in theatre.

Back in 1928,
Richard Hollingshead
loved two things –
cars and movies.
He decided to combine them,
so he could enjoy them both…
at the same time.
At home, he nailed a screen
 to trees in his backyard.
He put a projector
on the hood of his car
and used a speaker,
which was behind the screen.
 Dada!
The very, very first
drive in theatre!
He knew he needed to
improve his design
and even used a sprinkler
to stimulate rainy conditions
 while testing his idea.
He lined cars up
to determine which manner
of parking allowed for
the best viewing of the movie…
And, by the 6th of June, 1933
he opened the first
drive in theatre.

The investment set him
back $30,000.
He charged 25 cents per car
 and 25 cents per person.
 For his first movies,
three large speakers were
 positioned beside the screens.
The sound quality wasn’t
too great – and it
annoyed his neighbours!
What a crazy idea
 for a guy to have…
It’s a shame that this
is no longer a part
of our living history.
