Today
– but back in 1982,
The ET movie premiered.
We need some fun facts!
I imagine that Mars’ M&Ms
regret their choice
to pull
the M&Ms from the movie!
(they thought that the film
would be a
flop
and didn’t want to be
associated with such a
dreadful movie!
Reese’s Pieces were used
instead and their
sales
sky-rocketed.
(Bummer!)
This was the start
of product placement
in
movies.
Except for Eliot’s mum,
no adults feature
in the
first half of the film.
The film cost
$10.5 million to make.
About 10% of
the budget
was spent on puppets
and animatronics.
Inflation considered,
this is the fourth highest
grossing movie of all time.
That squelching noise
made when ET walked
was
created using a
wet shirt, filled with jelly!
Cool!
ET’s voice belonged to a
two-packets-of-cigarettes-a-day
smoking Pat Welsh.
She spent nine and a half
hours
recording and was paid $380.
(But wait! There’s more!)
Another 16 people
helped with ET’s lines.
His noises were also taken
from raccoons, sea otters
and horses.
The doctors and nurses
who worked on ET
were real emergency
room
professionals!
The kitchen scene was created
by a boy,
who was born without
legs,
walking on his hands…
in an ET costume.
When the film was screen tested
at the Cannes
Film Festival,
it received a standing ovation.
It was an unofficial entry.
Many of the official films
did not get an
ovation.
For the 20th Anniversary
re-release in
2002,
Spielberg spent $100,000
digitally removing the guns.
To celebrate this day
in real style,
you need to watch the movie
- just becareful of
the scary bit with the
men in the spacesuits!
Oh, and don't eat M&M's
- that wouldn't be authentic!
Information and more.
