12/12/12

Today is 12/12/12!
For that reason alone,
I knew I had to blog today!
When I saw
it was Poinsettia Day,
I figured there must be
some strange reason
(other than Christmas)
for this flower to get a day.
Sure, it’s a lovely plant…
and, Very Christmasy!
But, is there anything else?
So, off to google I went.
My search instantly landed me
 on the Poinsettia Day webpage.
(I know I’m on to something
special if it has its own webpage!)
I learned that today
 is the anniversary
of the death of botanist,
Joel Roberts Poinsett.
He was also a physician
and a minister to Mexico.
Working in Mexico,
he saw the poinsettia plant
 and loved it enough,
he took clippings
and sent them to his home
 in Southern California.
It was 1828.
Paul Ecke discovered a way
 to cause the seedlings
to branch.
(I’m not absolutely sure
what this means,
but it’s significant… because…)
 in 2002, the
House of Representatives
 created Poinsettia Day,
to honour Paul Ecke.
(That gives the day
a bit more serious-ness!)
Paul Ecke the third
still runs their
poinsettia farm today!
Have a guess how much money
 poinsettias make for the
American economy each year…
Go on, have a guess.
How much did you say?

Want me to let you know?
(I will anyway!)
Each year, poinsettias contribute
 $250,000,000
to the economy!
That’s a lot of flowers!

Hearing that, it probably
 comes as no surprise
that these are the most popular
potted plant sold
in the US and Canada.
In Mexico, the poinsettia
has been used as a
Christmas plant
since the 1600s!

Inspired into Writing

Letter Writing Day
I am feeling the pressure
 of the Christmas card season.
I am a little,
no… very slack
when it comes to
sending Christmas cards.
But, today is
Letter Writing Day,
so… today…
I am going to write on
some Christmas cards!
I will, I promise!
I will write on them…
sort out some envelopes…
and mail them!
Woohoo!
Today is not only a
“crazy day”
it is an Inspiring Day!

Nick and Shoes

Can’t wait until Christmas?

You don’t have to!
Go and check your shoes…
Right now!
Is there anything in them?
Are they filled with lollies?
Apples or Nuts?
Coins?
Did you find a present?

No?
Maybe you didn’t leave
 your shoes by the chimney?
Maybe next year.
Today is St Nicholas Day.
Kids leave their shoes
by the chimney,
Good Old Nick turns up
 during the night and leaves
a small gift in the kids' (stinky) shoes!
I did read about one poor
 teacher’s story
about this tradition.
She taught some childen
who were lucky enough
to have been visited by St Nicholas.
 They came to school,
excited and happy to tell their
classmates all about it.
Those poor kids who were not
 visited by St Nick were
devastated and crying,
asking why they were not visited!
Oh, imagine!
I wonder how worried those kids
 were on Christmas Eve –
and how relieved
they must have been
 to wake up to presents
 on Christmas Day!
On that note – I have had
to supress a grin or two
when the kids in my class
have told me about seeing Santa –
the REAL one!!
Oh, the fun of Christmas
when Santa is still real!

You Saw Nothing!

Today was so sneaky,
it almost snuck through
without being seen!
Just like a ninja!
Today is Ninja Day.

Ninjas were professional spies,
sneaking in, finding secrets
and killing people
without being seen.
Before you throw today
 into the Crazy Day basket
 and leave this page…
you should know
that the white House security
and American SWAT teams
are trained by real-life ninjas.
Cool.
So, perhaps, ancient ninjas
were originally mountain priests.
Back between 592 and 710,
there are many references
to ninjas and their ability
 to sneak in,
gather information
and sneak away!
The most famous time for ninjas,
 however, was between
the 12th and 16th centuries.
During wars, they were hired
 as assassins
and were used as spies.
  Once things settled
and the country became peaceful
once more,
no-one needed anyone killed…
no secrets needed to be known…
the ninjas moment
to shine was over.
They were now jobless…
what to do?
They began writing…
explaining their training…
their tools…
their weapons…
and their skills.
Stories were written about them
 and movies were made.
While one time,
they dressed to blend in
 with the people around them
(black clothes and a mask
hardly hid you in a crowd!).
Most ninjas wore blue outfits –
 the same clothing worn
by pheasants of the time.
People soon wrote about ninjas
 as though they were magical,
black-wearing sleuths
and killers…
superheroes and legends…
and this is still how
 we consider ninjas to be.

Perhaps, you could sneak up
behind someone tonight…
act like a ninja and scare them
(killing them may not be
 such a good idea –
just give them a good scare!)

Happy Ninja Day!

Brown Suede Shoes

There have been many
strange days celebrated this year…
Many of those days
were just straight up weird!
By the end of the year -
the Crazy Days have to
become even weirder…
even stranger…
even more “out there”!
Well, today will be labelled
 under “Crazy Days” for sure!
Today is…
Wear Brown Shoes Day.
I kid you not!
There is no reason for it.
There is no hidden meaning,
nothing clever and significant…
 it’s just a day
for wearing brown shoes!

Look down at your feet?
Did you wear the correct
coloured shoes today?

There's a House With a Roof

Roof Over Your Head Day

Today is a day for appreciating
what you have, r
ather than looking around you
 and wishing for more.
I think living in rural Thailand
as a teenager has helped me
to know how lucky I am.
I’ve seen people living in boxes…
 in homes built from cardboard,
scrap metal and pieces of board.
I’ve talked and played with kids,
living in slums,
and been surprised by their smiles.
I’ve seen people
huddled against vents,
 in the snow,
trying to stay warm
on wet pavements.

Now, years and years later,
I hear the wind whistling
around my house,
beating at the windows
and fighting against the
branches of the trees…
and I think I’m lucky.
When the rain is beating down
and I’m rugged up inside,
warm and dry,
I often imagine how awful
it would be to be sleeping outside.
(Writing this, I realise
I should probably do more
 to try to help…)
on any given night in Australia,
 105,000 people
are sleeping outside,
fighting the elements.
 Nearly half of this number
is made up of people
under the age of 25.
Most of these people
fall in the category of
secondary homelessness,
which means they move
from shelter to shelter to shelter
 to boarding home to shelter…

Imagine having to carry
everything you own…
never knowing whether you’d be
 warm enough at night or
whether you’d be in a bed…
imagine finding a shower
you could use,
in order to clean yourself…
and then, there’s food.
Without money,
where does it come from?
 How do you cook it
without a home?

Today is Roof Over Your Head Day.
It’s the day to be
ever so grateful to be
lucky enough
to have the things you need.

(It might even be a good day
 to clean out the cupboards
and donate
your unwanted stuff
to charities…
or, you could donate money
to one of the many charities
 which help get people
 back on their feet.)

Fritter Day

Oh! Fritter Day!
That’s dinner sorted!
Nothing better than some hot,
fresh fritters,
drizzled with butter…
I do like banana fritters
(and I have a banana which
 needs to be used!)
I also like corn fritters,
with chives and tomatoes –
but, my tomatoes
are not ready to be picked yet…
so, banana fritters it is.

Fritter Day is held every December 2nd.
I’m sure there’s a solid reason
behind the creation of this day…
But, I can’t find it!

Pick It And Eat It

Eat A Red Apple Day

I’m guessing this is
an American celebration day
 because here in Australia,
it’s the first day
 of summer today!
Red apples are best in winter
– so I can’t bring myself
to eat a red apple today… I
 have to go
with a summery option –
to celebrate the new season.
I stayed
with the red colour theme…
I stayed with a fruit…
Instead of fully embracing
Eat A Red Apple Day,
I might rebel a little…
In fact, I may rebel
so much as to declare today
 a different day altogether!
Henceforth, T
he Cow declares today
to be Eat a Berry Day.
I have celebrated this day
wholeheartedly already!
Something I love about summer,
is my daily
punnet-full serving of berries,
fresh from the garden.
Delicious!
Happy Red Apple/Berry Day!
