Picnic Day
I learned that the original picnic
used to be a group of people,
in a restaurant,
with wine from home.
This was way back in 1692.
Later, it became a meal
where everyone brought something
to share.
By the nineteenth century,
a picnic became an outdoor meal.
There are countless
“Picnic Days”
now.
I’m about to give away
a family secret
... a favoured picnic spot of ours...
You have to walk up a hilly track
and sneak through a hedge
to get there.
The spot is nestled
under a couple of big gumtrees
and is protected
from the winds
by gorgeous old rock walls.
Hills slope down to the sea
and curious horses
brave peanut-butter
coated children’s fingers,
which carefully
stroke their fur...
One of our favourite
picnic areas
is a very old cemetery.
We call it “The Secret Garden”.
(Check out how much we have grown!)
