Rudy Santos' Twin

Would you chop off one of your arms?
Would you chop off your legs?
What about an ear – would you chop off an ear?
Van Gogh did – but would you?
What about your brother’s leg?
Would you chop that off?

These are questions Rudy Santos
had to consider.
Rudy Santos was born in the Philippines.

Rudy has four arms and three legs.
One of his “own” legs stops at his knee,
forcing him to walk with a crutch.

During the 1970s and 80s,
Rudy was known as Octoman.
He was famous and travelled
with a Freak Show.
This is where he met his wife.
By the late 80s, Rudy and his wife
moved away to live a private life.

Rudy’s condition is known as a parasitic twin.
Since birth, Rudy’s twin has
been growing from his stomach.
He’s been carrying him around all his life.

Rudy’s body was failing
under the pressure of his twin.
His back was curving under the extra weight.
His heart was suffering
and Rudy was finding it difficult
to keep his body nourished.

When the doctors told Rudy
they could cut the twin off…
Rudy walked away.

He walked away from surgery.
He couldn’t kill his twin.
I don’t know what decision I would make
if I was placed in his position.

I’ve spent a lot of time trawling the Internet
trying to find more information about Rudy.
There’s almost no information about him.
I can’t help but wonder whether he is still alive
as his body was failing a couple of years ago.
If he’s alive… I wish him well.

Courageous Speakers

Imagine…
You’re standing before crowds of people.
They’re all watching and waiting…
… wanting to hear what you say.
Your words are being sent around a large arena
by a loud and echoing microphone.
Your voice is being sent through airwaves
to countless people listening to radios.
Are you nervous?

Now imagine this…
You stutter.

I can imagine the pressure and stress
that would come from standing
before countless people and speaking.
I can imagine the stress
of speaking into a booming microphone.
I can’t imagine speaking across radio waves.
I cannot imagine doing any of that as a stutterer.

I watched “The King’s Speech” today.
I am stunned by the great courage of King George VI.
Anyone who can overcome such inner torment
and overcome such hurdles
deserves recognition.
What a brave man.

I’m inspired to read King George VI’s biography now.   It’s titled: “A Spirit Undaunted”  and was written by Robert Rhodes James.  I’m pleased to learn that this King “went on to distinguish himself as an inspired, inspirational and even eloquent leader.”
The strength of character portrayed in the movie
made me curious about less famous stutters.
At a camp in 2011,
a group of child stutterers got together
and wrote this list for their teachers:

DO - tell others not to tease us.
DO - treat us like everyone else in the school.
DO - ask us what helps us to speak more fluently.
DO - ask how much we want to contribute to class assembly and concerts.
DO - be positive and make eye contact.
DO - give us time to express ourselves.
DO NOT - rush us- give us time to finish.
DO NOT - finish off words/ sentences for us.
DO NOT - answer for us.
DO NOT - interrupt when we are trying.
DO NOT - tease/ mimic us.
PLEASE DO - share this information with others.

Take Aim

Travel warnings

have probably increased for Thailand today.

Guns will be out…

People will be lining the streets.

No one will be safe!

It’s Songran, Thai New Year.

Today will see

the start of a nation-wide water fight…

… in every city, town and village of Thailand.

No matter who you are

Or what you are doing

(Or what you are carrying!)

If you walk outside in Thailand today

Expect to get wet!

And... I'd be avoiding the elephants!

You, Me, Us

There's an art competition
and we decided to give the kids a chance -
and enter them.
The competition is called "You, Me and Us".
We decided to let the kids draw themselves...
The idea was to celebrate
Indigenous and Non Indigenous Australians
living together...
"You, Me and Us". One of my students is a blue eyed blondie
and his best mate
is a gorgeous brown eyed, dark skinned boy.
Watching them with arms around each other
was the inspiration for the drawings.
They really do represent
You, Me and Us.
Some of the kids spent a lot of time on their art
and others...
rushed to be finished in time!
They kids have all really enjoyed the art...
They have found new strengths. The girl who did the next artwork
handed it to me for judgement...
and I gave her a huge list of things
she needed to do I didn't even praise her...
I can't believe it.
So cruel!
When she came back to me
the huge smile on her face warmed me.
She'd heard me.
She'd adjusted her art...
and while her drawing may not be a masterpiece
she was so proud of herself!
I'm proud of her, for that.
Look at the hairline on this one... We're sending the art off to be judged in a couple of weeks.
Note: I didn't touch their art
not even the cutting out
(Though my cutting is as bad as their's!)

Those Who Can't - Charcoal Faces

We've been at the art lessons, again.
Charcoal - my favourite...
Over the years,
I have learned that everyone looks like an artist
When they use charcoal!
Even the 10 and 11 year olds in my class
look like they are bursting with talent...
well, some of them!
It was great watching the kids
as they realised that they could succeed in art!

(Some of them struggle in most other areas)

Ok... some of the kids still need a little more teaching...
But some are great.
I was tempted to add one of my niece's drawings...
She's only 5...
But her work would blend in with these.
Look at the eyes on this one -
Imagine if one day...
I'm walking in an art gallery
and there... in front of me...
is a masterpiece
belonging to one of my students!
Imagine!
(I've got it covered!
Any of my students who earn
a million dollars from their art
have to give me 5% of their earnings!
Its in the contract!)

Finishing Lines

I just ran a marathon.

Of kinds.

At 2:56pm today, I officially crossed the finish line.

My body was weary.

I felt a little shaky…

exhausted… tired.

Today, term one finished.

School Holidays have started.

This term was like a marathon.

Although I could see the finish line,

I had to force myself to the end…

… drag myself over the line.

But it happened!

Weary steps finally saw me finish the term.

Waiting for me at the end of the line were a few presents:

A few Easter chocolates

A beautifully scented homemade candle

A glass of wine!

Happy Holidays!
